Moved!

I forgot this version of Writerly Hpahazardry was still operational until I saw a reference to it in my Google Reader.  Yes, evidently I did subscribe to myself.  I'm going to believe it was to make sure the feed worked.Anyway, I'm blogging elsewhere now.  Go to www.writerlyhaphazardry.net to find the newest version of WH.

I heard it first on Twitter.

The day Paul Newman died, Krista Kennedy posted to Twitter that she first heard of his death there.  Her tweet was how I found out about his death.  I also found out on Twitter that the polls had shifted toward Obama, that Becky Howard had talked on the phone with her grandchild, and that Billie Hara was finishing up her dissertation.  When I watched the debates, I watched them on my local NBC channel while I read a Twitte

We're #1!

According to the Centers for Disease Control, Mississippi is the fattest state in the country with 32% of the adult population classified as obese.  It doesn't take rocket science to understand why.  We're the buffet capitol of the world.  We fry everything.  We put gravy on anything that sits still long enough.  Everybody's grandmother makes the best red velvet cake you've ever put in your mouth.  We also have high rates of poverty and illiteracy, which means t

Sweat Like It's 1899

Lately, I've been looking at those herbal detox products.  They claim to help get the pollutants and additives out of your system.  I haven't actually purchased any of them yet, but I've been tempted.  Ultimately, I've remained skeptical because I don't believe in adding any medications that aren't absolutely necessary to my body, and that includes herbs.  Really, herbs might be even dicier because they haven't gone through the same level of scientific study.  I barely trust science.  I'm certainly not going to trust hocus pocus hippie feel-good theories over s

Inspiring Diet Story of the Day

This was actually on CNN last week, but I can make it my story of the day if I want.  A woman lost a couple of school children in weight by switching to a raw foods vegan diet.  Maybe it's not the diet she chose so much as the amount of weight she lost and kept off that's so impressive, but I think there's something to this raw foods thing.  Not enough that I'd go whole hog, or whole zucchini as the case may be, but enough to seriously consider going half zucchini.

Kashi is as Kashi Does

It's Sunday morning. I've been awake at least 75 seconds, and I've already had breakfast. This is the way dieting works. You might not think about food when you don't care how much you eat, but once you start deliberately cutting back, it's the only thing on your mind.

Eat Carrots, Not Cheetos

I've been on a diet for about six hours now, so I decided it was time for an update.  Here's what I've done so far:

1.  Made veggie soup.  This is a good start.  I tossed a pack of frozen soup vegetables, a few cans of tomatoes, a salad bag of spinach, some canned beans, and a couple of cubes of vegetable bouillon in the crockpot.  How many calories could this possibly have?

Soup and Sensibility

Yesterday, I came home from work with a temperature of 99.9. I wasn’t really sick, and I wasn’t really not. I had planned to go to Oxford, but the trip didn’t work out. Instead of being disappointed that I was missing out on the thick of the excitement over Mississippi hosting the first presidential debate of the season, I was just relieved. I feel draggy and overwhelmed. I have too much to do. I probably would have only felt worse if I’d forced myself to get pumped up for a road trip.
